Holy Week Is for Making Us Whole:
A Constructive Devotional for a Divisive Time

For Christians, Holy Week is the most sacred time of the year. It’s a time to reflect on the world’s brokenness, God’s call to wholeness, and our own commitments to repair.

And not a moment too soon. We live in a time of profound turmoil, fragmentation, and partisan conflict. Now more than ever: How can the stories of Holy Week enrich and enliven our faith? How can Christians personally and communally respond in this time of division and rising tyranny, without exacerbating the very divisions we hope to help heal? How can we help build up the Beloved Community, even when we disagree?

Holy Week is for all of these questions and more. Holy Week is for making us whole.

In this week-long devotional, each holiday – Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday – includes a simple service: a biblical reading, a reflection, an opening and closing prayer, and a few suggested songs. A circle of candles (tealights, for example) is gradually extinguished, one by one, as we move through the week – and then is relit and expanded with the radiant, hopeful joy of Easter morning.

And along the way, we explore key themes and practices essential not only to Holy Week, but also to faithful Christian life in times like these: standing up for truth without partisanship; listening and speaking with love; loving our enemies; and living in solidarity.
