cowgirl boots

I’m on an early morning run.  I see them in the grocery store parking lot, mother and daughter. The little girl looks to be three or four, in green skirt and cowgirl boots.  Her mother, more practical, is in a tailored skirt and top.

As I pass by I hear the mother say, “Hurry!  We have to hurry!  We can’t make time for that right now!”

The little girl stops, “Why can’t we?”  Her mom explains, “Because you have school and I have work and then a million other things after that...”

Firmly planted in her cowgirl tracks, the little girl says, “I want to make time, Mommy.  I want to make time right now!”

The mother opens her mouth as if to respond, then stops.  What can she say in the face of such wisdom?

God in your cowgirl boots, you surprise us on our early morning dash.  Stop us, slow us down, and open us up to the moment.  Amen.
